Office Depot’s take on talent is to attract, develop and retain individuals with the capabilities for meeting current and future business needs. That’s why we make sure that talented associates get valuable opportunities and broad perspectives to enable and support their career development.

Identifying and developing talented associates, determining who will be their successors, and assessing when they are ready to make a move to a next level position are important tasks for all our managers.

Talent identification starts with taking into account the performance appraisal process. Managers calibrate the performance and potential of each associate against the peer level across the organization and the outcome of the assessment of each associate is used to create a development plan focused on addressing the perceived competency gaps for the next step in the associate’s career.

If someone is ready for a next stepand should there be no appropriate role available immediately, they are encouraged to take on additional roles or additional scope, to lead projects, to be part of a team that creates something new or rolls out a new activity, to become a change agent or a troubleshooter. Some talents may be offered the chance to take another role, in order to broaden their skills set and gain further business acumen.

As a talented associate moves higher up the organization so do the scope, complexity and depth of knowledge required in order to fulfill that role successfully. Preparing talents to meet the challenges of the next level means that a more specific tailored program related to competency requirements is needed.
